Mission of English Language Department
To develop inspiring leaders who are confident and critical thinkers effective in both oral and written communication.
Approach to English Language Teaching
Dialogic teaching is a key approach in the teaching of English Language. This approach seeks to capitalize on the power of classroom talk to stimulate and extend students’ thinking and understanding. It also promotes active listening and speaking skills in a rich language environment.
A school-wide reading programme is carried out during curriculum time to instil the habit of reading and to enhance students’ receptive skills in language learning. The school has adopted 2 distinct approaches for this programme. The extensive approach used at lower secondary level seeks to spark students’ interest in reading by exposing to them a wide range of topics whilst the intensive approach used for the upper secondary seeks to broaden students’ general knowledge as well as to increase students’ reading comprehension skills i.e. cognitive competence through cognitive strategies for learning from texts.
Drama Enrichment Workshop
All Sec 1 Express students go through a 10-week drama workshop by learning drama as their first module in the 2-part Literature curriculum before they go on to study prose in the later terms. The objectives of the drama programme are as follow:
• To develop confident speakers who can articulate and communicate effectively
• To provide students with a wider exposure to dramatic techniques and performance theories.
To make language fun, relevant and authentic, all students are involved in role play and public speaking. All lower secondary students are to assume the role of famous historical personality and speak of his/her contributions in the chosen era in front of an audience whilst the upper secondary students will speak about societal issues and share his/her opinions in front of an audience. This platform enables our students to hone their skills in public speaking i.e. use English Language to express themselves confidently and develop awareness of the purpose, audience, context and culture (PACC) in language learning.
To cater to the interest of students, the school offers Literature as a GCE ‘O’ level subject. Interesting texts such as Lord of the Flies and Everything but the Brain are chosen to enable students to appreciate short stories.
